Altyn-Emel Nature Conservation Complex

In the western part of Kazakhstan, there is the famous Altyn-Emel Nature Conservation Complex, located near the Dzungar Range. The park’s territory includes historical and cultural monuments
The Altyn-Emel Nature Conservation Complex boasts not only flora and fauna, but also numerous architectural monuments. For example, here you can find well-preserved Scythian burial mounds. The average age of this necropolis reaches three thousand years. Another burial mound here is Tamgaly-Tas, dating back to the sixteenth century BC.
A well-known sacred place here is the cemetery “Bes-Shaty”, the name of which can be translated as “5 tents”. There is much historical evidence that it was here that the ancient Sakas performed their religious rites. The territory of the necropolis, which is almost two hectares, includes eighteen majestic burial mounds, the area of which is about 2.5×9 m.
In the western part of the necropolis there are almost forty-five stone slabs, each with various images of representatives of the local fauna carved on it. Unfortunately, scientists are not yet able to determine the exact meaning of these drawings. There is an assumption that all the drawings were part of a certain ritual of the local residents.
Numerous archaeological expeditions conducted here helped to identify various crypts made of Tien Shan spruce. Ethnographers say that this necropolis is included in the list of unique monuments of history, architecture and culture of the nomads who lived in Semirechye (the upper reaches of the Ili River).
