Two cities with the same name Urgench represent different countries and time periods. First city near the Turkmen Village embodies the habitation of ancient community, more precisely its ruins.

Nowadays, the ancient city, considerably established in 1 century AD is near the Turkmenistan’s border with neighboring country. Nobody knows precisely when that old settlement appeared, but some explorers and scientists’ information on Silk Road trips point on its ancient background.

In earlier times, approximately in 10 century, the city was well irrigated, industrial and trade center of Khorezm. The great leader Genghis Khan and his soldiers demolished the city and after a century passed, Amir Timor’s army completely destroyed it. After battles and extremely dry and hot weather people left the city for a better place to live. Nowadays, the old city remains, including its minarets, irrigation, fortresses and mosque, so travelers and explorers will be able to see the ruins of this ancient and unique place.

The second city on Uzbekistan’s territory near the border is modern Urgent. Established in early 20 century this city has no historical or architectural attractions, though Khorezm is the oldest region in central Asia with interesting history. The executive center of region, the city became the main midland spot for transportation and travelling to other cities of the republic.

Some railway routs connect different parts of the region and run to many directions from this transport heart. The city has all-purpose airport with the same name, which receives any kinds of air crafts and flights from various cities, including Saint-Petersburg, Moscow, Tashkent and others. Moreover, Urgench is connected with another neighboring city with 35 kilometers length trolleybus range. Trackless trolley is amazing and extraordinary way of travelling from one city to another. In this way, the city is worth to see and start the interesting journey to Khiva.
