09:00 Surrounded by powerful walls, the historic inner city of Khiva is the pearl of the Khorezm oasis and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The legend of the city’s foundation tells that the city grew around the Kheyvak well, the water from which had an amazing taste, and the well was dug by order of Shem, the son of the biblical Noah. In Ichan-Kala (the inner city of Khiva) you can still see this well today. Khiva was one of the cities of ancient Khorezm, which was a large state located in the west of Central Asia, south of the Aral Sea. Samarkand is one of the oldest cities in the world, founded, according to archaeological data, in the 8th century BC; the center of the historical region and state of Sogdiana. For over two thousand years, the city was a key point on the Great Silk Road between China and Europe, as well as one of the main centers of science in the medieval East. In the 14th century, it was the capital of the empire of Tamerlane and the Timurid dynasty. The vast majority of the city’s architectural masterpieces were built during this era.
