Distance – 60 km from the city of Baku.

 

The excursion route runs along the Salyan highway to the southwest of the Absheron Peninsula, to those places where, at a distance of only 60 km from the city of Baku in the 30s of the twentieth century, near the village of “Gobustan” rock paintings and sites of ancient people were found, dating back to the Stone Age. Along the way, guests will see an overview of the old oil fields on the Caspian Sea, and will hear full travel information related to oil and gas fields and manifestations of mud volcanoes in the territory of Azerbaijan.

Upon arrival at the «Gobustan State Historical and Artistic Reserve» guests will have a unique opportunity to explore the museum, which stores many artifacts and contains a huge number of archaeological materials, including exhibits of rock art. After visiting the museum complex, which consists of 12 exhibition halls, guests get back into the car and climb the asphalt road to the upper platform of the slope of Mount Beyukdash. From here begins the 40-minute walking part of the excursion and acquaintance with rock paintings – petroglyphs, sites of people of ancient eras, as well as other natural and archaeological monuments. End of the excursion return to Baku, optional viewing of the historical 12th century Mosque “Bibi-Heybat”
