The population of this city is 53,231 thousand people. Location – the north of Kyrgyzstan between 43 ° N and 75 ° E on the left bank of the Chu River, where the border with Kazakhstan runs. The ridge of the Tien Shan Mountains stretches from north to south. In the southern part of Tokmak, you can see the Kirgikh Ala-Too ridge. To the north of the Chu is the Ili Ala-Too, which extends all the way to Kazakhstan. Due to the geographical features of the region, Tokmak has repeatedly been at risk of flooding. One of these floods occurred in 1878, when in winter an ice jam on the Chu River formed a natural dam above the city. When the water began to spill, it flooded the entire city in a few minutes. To prevent such incidents, a dam was built on the Chu River 12-16 km from the city in 1909-1914. Its length was 1200 m. And in the eastern part, the second dam was 800 m long. It was because of the flood of 1878 that many of the population of the district town of Tokmak were resettled to neighboring Pishpek. The foundation date of Tokmok is considered to be the 19th century, namely the years of construction of the Kakand fortress – 1825-1830. In 1862, the fortress was attacked by Russian troops and was partially destroyed. However, the population of Tokmok fought for their land to the last, then Russian troops went to storm the city with the help of military shells, the population fell under the ruins of the fortress, the city was taken by storm. On the site of the Kakand fortifications, Russian military points were erected. In May 1868, in the ruins of the Tokmok fortress, a detachment of General Chernyaev, who arrived here from Verny, was located and on the site of the once existing fortification, a new settlement of Tokmak was founded. Since 1867, the settlement received the status of a city and became the center of the Tokmak district of the Semirechye region of the Turkestan General-Governorate. After the center was moved to Pishpek, as a result of the flood, Tokmak lost its city status and restored it in 1927.
