A surprisingly stylish place that creates an inimitable atmosphere of a real Armenian tavern is the restaurant “Tun Lagmajo”. The restaurant offers its guests to get acquainted with the culture of this amazing country, and to comprehend it not only through the stomach, but also contemplating around them. The tavern is located in the center of the capital, next to the famous hotels of Armenia, but having stepped over its threshold, it seems to you that the modern city with its bustle, neon signs, endless conversations on a mobile phone and predatory silhouettes of cars remained somewhere on the other side of the time curtain.
The restaurant consists of an indoor space and an open veranda, where it is pleasant to sit on a warm summer evening. But even if you have chosen a table in the open air, be sure to look into the hall – there is definitely something to see there. The furniture, however, is selected in the same style throughout the restaurant. These are massive tables and benches or chairs made from processed pieces of wood, but made so skillfully that, despite all their comfort, they create an amazing impression of being knocked together by hand from slightly planed branches.
The area located in the open air is decorated with traditional Armenian clay jugs, and a massive wheel, previously belonging to a cart, is comfortably located here, the cherished dream of any antique dealer or designer. Near one of the tables, instead of the usual chairs, there are real wooden swings. So the process of tasting local dishes can be given a certain adventurousness – try to carry a spoonful of soup, swinging first towards the table, then back. But for a treat with baked goods or a cocktail tasting, it is perfect. Your tour of Armenia passed without visiting picturesque mountain villages and charming zucchini – then you should look here.
The doors to the inner hall are decorated with heavy lanterns, and are entwined with the ubiquitous wild grapes. The letters of the name, written in black paint, slide along the white plastered walls. Perhaps the only sign that you are still in the 21st century will be a counter with salads and a spacious refrigerator with all kinds of drinks. And as if in contrast to them, on the other side there is a folded oven (tonratun), in which not only bread and lavash (by the way, very nicely hung right there on a clothesline) are baked, but also various meat and fish dishes. This method of cooking allows the dish to retain all its original juiciness and acquire an unusual softness. Be sure to try the local masterpieces, chicken or lamb shoulder “in the oven”. You will not be able to taste such local delicacies even during your vacation in Uzbekistan. If the heat does not bother you, and in winter it will only be pleasant, settle down near the sizzling mass and watch with interest how the cooking process itself takes place.
The interior of the restaurant itself is simply charming. Cheerful uneven strokes of ochre cover the plaster not only on the walls, but also on the ceiling, uneven depressions seem to accidentally reveal the rough stonework, which shimmers wetly, covered with a thin layer of varnish. The walls are decorated with paintings, antique clocks, issues of ancient magazines and neat shelves lined with books and funny antiques. For example, old radiograms or ancient cameras. There is a whole bunch of stuff here, from samovars and clay jugs to decrepit TVs and rotary phones.
For those who would like to spend time in a cozy company, without disturbing other guests of the tavern with their fun, there is a separate room designed for ten people. So you can have a nice birthday party, or just meet with friends without any reason.
If you are limited in time, or just don’t like to wait aimlessly for your order to be brought to you, just book a table in advance and discuss what dishes you would like to try during the meal when you order. Then by the agreed time, the dishes will already be decorating the table you have chosen. This important task can be entrusted to the staff of the Armenian hotel where you are staying. If you want to diversify the menu with your own recipe, just tell us how to cook it and what is included in the ingredients, and if the required products are available, they will be happy to cook it for you. Salads and cold appetizers can be selected by simply examining the display case – part of the menu is presented there. In addition to meat, magically revealing its delicious pieces from the oven, here you can treat yourself to various soups, as well as pizzas, which are also baked in a miracle hearth.
In the tavern you can try a glass of homemade wine, taste sunny Armenian cognac, or choose something else from a long list of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Appreciate the aromatic smoke of a hookah, order one or a couple here, choosing the type of tobacco you like.
The tavern is always glad to welcome guests, it hospitably opens its doors from ten in the morning until midnight.
