How to get around Armenia

If you are planning not just to spend some time in Yerevan, but to travel around the whole country, then the best means of transport will undoubtedly be buses. In addition to the cheapness of this mode of transportation and sufficient comfort of this type of transport, only by bus can you get to any city in the country, unlike a train or plane. Not only regular buses go from city to city, but also small minibuses designed to carry 14 people. A trip on such a minibus will cost very little – it all depends on the mileage. Similar buses also travel on city routes. The fare within the city limits costs about 20-30 cents. In order not to torment yourself with traveling on public, albeit comfortable, transport in Yerevan itself, you can always take a taxi. According to the official tariff, 1 kilometer of travel by taxi costs the same 20-30 cents, although if you plan to ride all day – you can always agree with the driver on a fixed price. So you can go to Armenia on a cheap tour.

To see some sights, it is more convenient to book a tour than to plan an independent trip. Firstly, it will be cheaper, and secondly, it is more convenient. There are a huge number of programs, you just need to walk around the local travel agencies, which can be found literally at every step in the city center. A trip that will take half a day will cost only 6 dollars. It is just too difficult to get to some monuments by public transport, and buying a tour will cost less than renting a car. A last minute tour is unlikely to include a large list of excursions, but this is not a problem – all the rest can be purchased on the spot.

Yerevan and several other cities are connected by rail. True, traveling by train in Armenia is usually not recommended – due to some slowness of this type of transport. But the specific comfort, returning us to the good old Soviet times, will give a special atmosphere and romance to the trip.

Despite the fact that Armenia has several airports, finding a suitable domestic flight is quite difficult.

The most common way to explore the country by renting a car does not work very well in Armenia. It is not even about the rules – they are quite democratic here. For example, a Russian license will suit local car rental companies quite well. The required experience is 1 year behind the wheel, and the minimum age of the prospective driver is 21 years. On the other hand, renting a car here is quite expensive, the behavior of other drivers on busy highways can be somewhat unpredictable. And this is not to mention the somewhat confusing road routes. In addition, not all hotels in Armenia can provide parking for residents. So, less experienced drivers who want to be independent and also plan to taste local drinks right along the way should just hire a taxi driver for a couple of days. It will not be too expensive, but it is safer for those who are not very confident behind the wheel.
